Fear of the Lord

I have been heavily pondering on the fear of the Lord.  What do you think about it?  Was it just for the Old Testament folks???

I realize that there is a difference on how the word “fear” is used  in certain passages.

EX: “Perfect love cast out all fear 1John 4:18 vs.“By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.” Hebrews 11:7

This passage from Corey Russell’s book really provoked me in finding out what it means to live in a “fear of the Lord” reality.

“The fear of the Lord exposes our false ideas of a god made in our own image, instead of the reality of the eternal, living God.  Whether we admit it or not, most of us have created a God that suits us-we select the passages that we like from the Bible and disregard those we don’t; we choose to discuss spiritual matters with only those people who will agree with us and tell us what we want to hear; we readily accept the mercy, forgiveness and grace of God, but convince ourselves that God’s call to holiness, righteous living and self-sacrafice doesn’t apply to us.  The fear of the Lord is the cure for our false views of God.” – Corey Russell PURSUIT OF THE HOLY p. 118

Prov. 2:1 My son, if you will receive my sayings, And treasure my commandments within you,

Prov. 2:2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding;

Prov. 2:3 For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding;

Prov. 2:4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures;

Prov. 2:5 Then you will discern the fear of the LORD, And discover the knowledge of God.

IF YOU #1:

  • Receive my sayings
  • Treasure my commands
  • Make your ear attentive to wisdom
  • Incline your heart to understanding

IF YOU #2:

  • Cry for discernment
  • Lift your voice for understanding

IF YOU #3:

  • Seek her as silver
  • Search for her as hidden treasures

  • Will discern the fear of the LORD, And discover the knowledge of God

••• I think this is pretty important stuff, what do you thing???

If you want to learn more about this subject, then read Corey Russell’s book, PURSUIT OF THE HOLY.

  • Proverbs 16:6 Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for;
    through the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil.

    Another good book is The Fear of the Lord by John Bevere

  • I have so much to learn about the fear of the Lord. I always look at “fear” as having reverance and awe for God. It’s like if I were to approach the Queen of England I would have fear, but in an awestruck sort of way. So when Noah was “moved with Godly fear” to prepare the ark, it was out of his love, reverance and obedience to God that he did it. Again, I have so much to learn and I think I am going to read Corey’s book again.

  • Patrick, I think this is very important stuff! There are literally millions of people in our own nation who are headed for eternal destruction; and one of the main reasons is they do not rightly discern the fear of the Lord! This should break our hearts…driving us to our knees in prayer…and empassion us with a bold loving witness to others for Christ!
    “Through the fear of the Lord, men depart from evil.” I, myself, would have never surrendered to Christ in loving gratitude, had the Lord not first struck me with a healthy dose of holy terror! As the song says, “It was grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fear relieved.”
    As Michelle stated, John Bevere’s book on the subject is excellent. God bless you Patrick! Keep it up mighty man of God!

  • I always love reading and hearing your thoughts and what He is teaching you Pack, it is encouraging to look deeper into the life He calls us to live.
