John Hancock

This is part one of my Patriotic Posts Series (Currently writing on the signers of the Declaration of Independence)

John Hancock was the first of fifty- six men to sign the Declaration of Independence. His signature being first was at the top and it was also the biggest and boldest of them all.  He made quite the exclamation and after penning his now famous name, he said, “There, I guess King George will be able to read that.”

Signing and supporting this declaration was a monumental moment for the signers, the United States of America, and all future generations.  John Hancock and those that followed pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor.

So what was really on the line when John Hancock dipped his quill pen into the jet-black ink well to sign over his LIFE, FORTUNE, and SACRED HONOR?

A year prior to signing he was honored by being elected president of the Continental Congress. Shortly after being elected he married the love of his life, Dorothy “Dolly” Quincy and they were expecting their first child (Lydia) in October of 1776. John had also inherited a staggering fortune after the passing of his uncle.

John Hancock was born January 23, 1737 in Braintree Massachusetts to his father, Reverend John Hancock, and his mother Mary.  John had deep roots in the Christian faith; both his father and grandfather were Congregationalist ministers and graduates of Harvard’s ministerial school.

John would have been a minister of the faith as well if his father had not passed away when he was 7 years old.  His life took a different course than expected but he never gave up his faith.  When John was 13 his childless aunt and uncle adopted him and raised him.  His uncle Thomas Hancock was one of the wealthiest men in New England.  He established and owned an importing and exporting business to Britain and acquired great wealth from it.

John had graduated from Harvard and had since worked for his uncle. When his uncle passed in 1764, John inherited the business becoming known as, “King Hancock”.  Since, he became heavily involved in politics rising up as one of the most well known patriots while fighting for America’s liberties during the Revolutionary War and beyond.  He passed in 1793 and was remember as a generous man willing to lay down all he had for the freedom of America.

John Adams later wrote of him to Jedidiah Morse, 1818.

Of Mr. Hancock’s life, character, generous nature, great and distinguished sacrifices and important services, if I had forces, I should be glad to write a volume. But this I hope will be done by some younger and abler hand.

Reverend Dr. Thatcher, John Hancock’s pastor at Brattle, giving his eulogy said,

“His reverence for religion was never lost. He was interested in every thing that related to the house of God. He exceeded his worthy ancestors in his liberality to this society and proved his real attachment to our peace and happiness. It might have been said of him as of the centurion by the Jews,’He loved our nation and hath built us a synagogue.'”

John Hancock was a great man and I want to continue to highlight his Christian faith.  Being a framer and founder of our constitution I think it is important to remember him for the man of God that he was.

The following is copied from HERE

John Hancock was a lifelong member of the Brattle Street Congregationalist Church. His name was inscribed on the cornerstone of the church for the 1,000 pounds he gave when the church was built. He also bought the church’s bell. He also gave a Bible to a church in Lunenberg and bought another bell for a church in Jamaica Plain.

He made frequent appeals to God in his role as President of the Continental Congress and Governor of Massachusetts. In these public positions, he made many statements of praise and thanks to God for His blessings in the fight for independence, made public requests for prayer and repentance and asserted that God was in control of America’s destiny. Hancock also advocated state support of religious institutions.

Some statements revealing his religious faith from some of his public statements and proclamations include:

  • In a letter to the Continental Army in March 1776, Hancock proclaimed that the same God who had foiled British efforts to conquer Massachusetts would defeat their “deep-laid scheme” against the other colonies as well.
  • In an appeal to all the colonies in September 1776, he stated that members of Congress relied “on Heaven for the justice of our cause.”
  • He also said, “I am persuaded under the gracious smiles of Providence, assisted by our own most strenuous endeavors, we shall finally succeed.”
  • From his inaugural address as governor in 1780, Hancock thanked God for “the peaceable and auspicious” adoption of the new state constitution.
  • In 1782 Hancock reassured members of the Massachusetts legislature that “the favor of heaven” would eventually establish America’s righteous claims.
  • Hancock’s Thanksgiving proclamation the following year encouraged citizens to express their gratitude for God’s numerous blessings and to recognize that their “entire Dependence” was on “His Goodness and Bounty.”

Here are some other well known quotes from him.

“Resistance to tyranny becomes the Christian and social duty of each individual. … Continue steadfast and, with a proper sense of your dependence on God, nobly defend those rights which heaven gave, and no man ought to take from us.”
History of the United States of America, Vol. II, p. 229.

And in his Boston Massacre oration he stated,

I have the most animating confidence that the present noble struggle for liberty will terminate gloriously for America. And let us play the man for our God, and for the cities of our God; while we are using the means in our power, let us humbly commit our righteous cause to the great Lord of the Universe, who loveth righteousness and hateth iniquity. And having secured the approbation of our hearts, by a faithful and unwearied discharge of our duty to our country, let us joyfully leave our concerns in the hands of him who raiseth up and pulleth down the empires and kingdoms of the world as he pleases; and with cheerful submission to his sovereign will, devoutly say: “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the field shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls; yet we will rejoice in the Lord, we will joy in the God of our salvation.”

•••

Let us not forget the great faith and sacrifice of our founding fathers.  I believe that the LORD is still looking for those with great faith to lay down their lives, fortunes, and honor not just for the freedoms of this nation but most of all for His Kingdom.

Upon the execution of John Hus in 1415, a revolution against the Roman Church and government broke out, which led to an all out war.  There was an uprising of those in favor of reform in the Church known as Hussite’s (aka Wycliffites) that defended the teachings of John Hus following his martyrdom.  Those in favor wrote Roman authorities accusing the Council for ill practices only to receive a letter back stating to attack all of Hus’ followers.

Things escalated rather quickly and attack did break out across the Bohemian and Moravian land. By 1420 the Roman authorities had actually organized an anti-hussite crusade, to fully wipe out all Wycliffites, Hussites, and “heretics” as previously promised.

By this time there was a conservative fraction of Hussites, known as the Utraquist that focused on the Eucharist and how it was administered.  And there was the “radicals” or Taborites that esteemed the divine law (the Bible) to be the rule and standard for society as well as in the religious and political spheres.

These main camps of hussites joined together resulting in great military feats.  The hussites (in the broader definition) had four main decrees that they demanded from the Roman Church:

1. The word of God shall be preached and made known in the kingdom of Bohemia freely and in an orderly manner by the priests of the Lord.

2. The sacrament of the most Holy Eucharist shall be freely administered in the two kinds, which are bread and wine, to all the faithful in Christ who are not precluded by mortal sin – according to the word and disposition of Our Saviour.

3. The secular power over riches and worldly goods which the clergy possesses in contradiction to Christ’s precept, to the prejudice of its office and to the detriment of the secular arm, shall be taken and withdrawn from it, and the clergy itself shall be brought back to the evangelical rule and an apostolic life such as that which Christ and his apostles led.

4. All mortal sins, and in particular all public and other disorders, which are contrary to God’s law shall in every rank of life be duly and judiciously prohibited and destroyed by those whose office it is

However, the “mess” of reformation continued as the Church declined these requests.  The hussites, mainly under class man, held their own against a total of 3 crusades that the Roman authority brought against them.  The stumbling block to their victories was the bickering, bashing, and wild fire that broke out between the sects mainly due to their theological differences.  This disjointing caused a civil war between the two camps, ending with the Taborites beating out the Utraquists resulting in a temporary truce.

The hussites continued in victory against all attacks up to the Council of Basel in 1433.  Peace treaties were negotiated but nothing landed until the Utraquists eventually made a deal or “compact” (which was later voided) with the Roman Church allowing them to attain some of their goals while remaining under the Roman rule.  By 1434 the Utraquists along with Roman authorities attacked the Taborites and   came close to annihilating them.  This time many of the “radicals” either joined the Utraquists or went underground being apart of the Unity of Brethren, which was independently formed in 1457.

In no way do I think this approach was done perfectly or that every person had good intentions.  But I wonder where we would be today with out this revolution.  What would cause so many believers to literally fight for the Word of God to be preached and made known to all?  Yes, it got messy, political, and selfish…but I believe that there were many men who believed that the Word of God was the only thing that was going to bring true freedom to the Church of their day.  These men had seen and heard the Truth for themselves and they could no longer live under a religious system that distorted it for profit and gain.

Now, today we can read the Bible when and where we want, but do we spiritually fight for these truths revealed in His Word that lead us into the experiential knowledge of God?  Is it worth fighting for everyday to read and mediate on with the guiding of Holy Spirit or is it better left alone on the shelf collecting dust?  It is sad to see that so many believers in our day have written off the Bible as an historic document or simply poetic imagery.  The Bible is the very word of God and is not something to be taken lightly!  I see too many people picking apart the Word and using its substance for a food fight instead of actually eating the Word and allowing it to cause growth, strength,  and maturity in ones spirit.  I am not putting the Bible above the Holy Trinity but I believe that the Body of Christ needs a renewed spiritual tenacity to fight for and seek out the unending worth found in the Bible.

1“Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters;
And you who have no money come, buy and eat
Come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without cost.
2“Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And delight yourself in abundance.
3“Incline your ear and come to Me
Listen, that you may live;
And I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
According to the faithful mercies shown to David.

Isaiah 55:1-3

Have you caught wind of the latest HISTORIC VOTE to defund Planned Parenthood by stripping them of their taxpayer funding?

What is Planned Parenthood might be your first question…It is an organization that, “is many things to many people, to me, it is the LARGEST abortion chain in America! They do about *320,000 abortions a year!

If that’s not enough they have recently been exposed on undercover cameras for,

“Willing to aid and abet the trafficking of underage “sex workers” by offering advice to an undercover investigator posing as a “pimp” on how to obtain secret abortions, contraception, and STD tests.” Lifesitenews.com

You can find that video coverage right HERE

And you can find other videos of PP and their abuses HERE

How much funding do they actually get a year from taxpayer funding…Around *$350,000,000!!!

What was the vote in the House of Representatives…It was an overpowering majority vote of 240 to 185! A huge victory for pro lifers!

And just so you are aware, the voting of this amendment is not removing all money that the government offers to health care providers…NO, it is just removing the funds from the health care providers that provide the killing of innocent babies with the money that is offered to them.

I believe Lila Rose response to this momentous news says it best.

“We applaud those in Congress who championed the safety of women, young girls and children today, and refused to funnel hundreds of millions of tax dollars into an organization that furthers the trafficking of minors and enables sexual abusers. We now turn our attention to the Senate. Now they must examine the facts and move to pull the plug on subsidizing Planned Parenthood’s exploitation of the most vulnerable among us. The case to cease funding is crystal clear. But for any Senator who remains unsure, imagine explaining to your constituents that you voted to keep sending $350 million of their tax dollars to a ‘non-profit’ that puts young girls in harm’s way and made $63 million in profits by aborting 300,000 unborn children last year. It’s time once and for all to stop financing these activities.” – Lila Rose, President of Live Action

Sadly, in a new video, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards condemns House passage on February 18 of an amendment that would defund PP by saying ,

“It’s funding that saves lives, and they killed it”…

The abortion of 320,000 murdered baby’s is not saving lives, it is in fact the killing of lives!

This is far from over, as now the amendment must be passed by the Senate.  The opposition is heated and the line has been drawn very clear.  LIFE or DEATH?  I pray that you join in this HISTORIC CAUSE by spreading the word and taking a stand for LIFE.  The passing of this amendment will be a day to remember.

I am thrilled to say that me, my wife, and 3-month-old girl, Liberty, joined in with an estimated 50,000 PRO-LIFERS in the Walk for Life West Coast on Saturday, January 22nd.  It was a perfect day in the bay as we walked from Justin Herman Plaza to the Marina Greens.  It was only a 2.5-mile walk but with so many peaceful pedestrians the pace was protracted while the pulse from the peoples was lively in the proclaiming of how precious LIFE is!

The mile long flow of joyous people streamed through the city with radiant sunshine beating down while a very small, vulgar, and dark cloud of opposition was left standing on the sidelines to watch all 50,000 plus PRO- LIFERS walk by.  What a statement we made!  Regardless of how the “big” press covered it, the PRO-LIFE people were seen and heard and could not be ignored.  It was great to see so much diversity in race, religion, and age to come into UNITY with something that we all hold dear, LIFE.

Check out this video footage from one of the speakers at the walk, Abby Johnson:

She just came out with a new book called, UNPLANNED, get your hands on a copy to find out the truth and how important this issue of LIFE really is.  Here is a link to check out the first chapter of her book, Unplanned, http://40daysforlife.s3.amazonaws.com/chapter1.pdf

Here are some photos from the walk:

Tuolumne Bound4Life Chapter

You can’t go wrong when you are surrounded in a sea full of people that value and cherish LIFE. Thank you to all that helped put this on and to those that showed up so that others could see that the tides are changing and a GIGANTIC wave of PRO-LIFERS are crashing on the scene with Light and LIFE to reveal the Truth; breaking through the deception of pro-choice, planned parenthood, and abortion!

Thanks for reading, hope to see you all there next year! And remember, “Without LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not possible.”

Blessings,

Liberty Reign

The long awaited DAY OF DELIVERY (October 26, 2010).  I can now officially say that I am a Father, a Dad, Poppa…Daddy! I have been looking forward to this day for a long time and I can say the same for my wife.  This pregnancy has been a wonderful experience and saying the typical, “it’s life changing”, does not get close to describing the monumental moment.  The months leading up to this have been fun, challenging, exciting, and sobering. I would relate these last 9 months of pregnancy to the coming of the Kingdom, “the now but not yet.” Liberty was in our presence the whole time and yet we knew that it was not the “full” experience that we were promised.  We watched her kick and move all around and yet we still could not fully see her and hold her.  God has promised us the Kingdom in the now and many times we can see it moving and kicking, but we also know that it is not yet fully manifested.  I cannot wait until the fullness of His kingdom is ushered from heaven to earth, what a glorious day!

I learned some things during the labor part of the pregnancy.  Matthew 24:13 says, “The one who endures to the end, will be saved.” This is such good news! When the birthing pangs came at times I felt like it was impossible, like they would never stop! Also, it is not easy to watch someone that you love go through suffering.  Now I can say I have a very small glimpse (like really small) of what the Father felt when His Son was crucified, or even when I am faced with trials or troubles.  But during the labor and contractions I was reminded of the Misty Edwards song that refers to Matthew 24:13, “If you don’t quit, you win”, “It’s going to get better, it’s going to be worth it!” Then I saw and felt the pattern of resting and “fighting” during the whole labor.  These small pockets of rest were very important for my wife and I found that it was even more important for me to pray and fight on her behalf while she was resting.  I heard the Lord say that it is important to allow Him to fight for us when He has called us into His rest.  There will be times when it feels like we are fighting and He does not seem to be present even though He is there.  Those are the times when our faith is being tested by trials and tribulations.  But it is important to perceive when He has called us into “rest”, so that we can allow Him to do the fighting for us and not take things on our own.  I hope that makes sense, just know that He is our rest and our strength.

You can read about it and talk about it, but there is nothing like encountering it for yourself! I thank God for His supernatural presence through the whole process.  Now that Liberty is here, I know no other way of living…IT IS THE SAME WITH MY SAVIOR IN MY LIFE!

Yours Truly,

One Proud Dad

The Manhattan Declaration is the unifying of ALL Christian believers to make a stand for LIFE, MARRIAGE, and RELIGIOUS LIBERTY.  I hope the Preamble below will remind you of our Christian heritage and why it is so important that we continue to stand for these moral issues not just by the signing and sharing of this document but by the walking out of what God has called us to as Christians.

PREAMBLE
Christians are heirs of a 2,000-year tradition of proclaiming God’s word, seeking justice in our societies, resisting tyranny, and reaching out with compassion to the poor, oppressed and suffering.

While fully acknowledging the imperfections and shortcomings of Christian institutions and communities in all ages, we claim the heritage of those Christians who defended innocent life by rescuing discarded babies from trash heaps in Roman cities and publicly denouncing the Empire’s sanctioning of infanticide. We remember with reverence those believers who sacrificed their lives by remaining in Roman cities to tend the sick and dying during the plagues, and who died bravely in the coliseums rather than deny their Lord.

After the barbarian tribes overran Europe, Christian monasteries preserved not only the Bible but also the literature and art of Western culture. It was Christians who combated the evil of slavery: Papal edicts in the 16th and 17th centuries decried the practice of slavery and first excommunicated anyone involved in the slave trade; evangelical Christians in England, led by John Wesley and William Wilberforce, put an end to the slave trade in that country. Christians under Wilberforce’s leadership also formed hundreds of societies for helping the poor, the imprisoned, and child laborers chained to machines.

In Europe, Christians challenged the divine claims of kings and successfully fought to establish the rule of law and balance of governmental powers, which made modern democracy possible. And in America, Christian women stood at the vanguard of the suffrage movement. The great civil rights crusades of the 1950s and 60s were led by Christians claiming the Scriptures and asserting the glory of the image of God in every human being regardless of race, religion, age or class.

This same devotion to human dignity has led Christians in the last decade to work to end the dehumanizing scourge of human trafficking and sexual slavery, bring compassionate care to AIDS sufferers in Africa, and assist in a myriad of other human rights causes – from providing clean water in developing nations to providing homes for tens of thousands of children orphaned by war, disease and gender discrimination.

Like those who have gone before us in the faith, Christians today are called to proclaim the Gospel of costly grace, to protect the intrinsic dignity of the human person and to stand for the common good. In being true to its own calling, the call to discipleship, the church through service to others can make a profound contribution to the public good.

I have posted the Preamble on my site in hopes that you will go over to the Manhattan Declaration website yourself.  You will be able to read the rest of the declaration in full, as well as SIGN THE DOCUMENT AND SHARE WITH OTHERS! I find this to be very important for our age in HISTORY.

Thanks for participating,

Patrick Judah

Hello Friends,

It has now been 10 days since TheCall in Sacramento, California.  I was blessed to be able to attend it with friends and family, what an impactful day!  We were blessed the night before with a sweet compilation of worship and prophecy that released a peace into our hearts that prepared us for a full day of prayer and fasting.  I don’t know if any of you have been to a Call before or if you made it to this one, but they can be physically draining.  I really think that the night of worship before prepared my heart for the day to come.

This years Call was filled with hungry hearts of young and old, it was really cool to see full family’s there with there babies and young children, just as Joel 2:16 says, “Gather the people, sanctify the congregation,Assemble the elders, Gather the children and the nursing infants.”

Cambria Esther Atkins

There is something that happens when you gather the Body of Christ together!  The rest of Joel 2:16 says, “Let the bridegroom come out of his room And the bride out of her bridal chamber.” TheCall brought us all out of our comfort zones, our prayer closets, our churches, and into the public arena to declare our love and devotion to our Bridegroom King, Jesus Christ!  And guess what?  He came and met us where we were and He responded to the cry of our hearts.

The day started with personal reflection and repentance of anything in our own hearts that may be hindering us and those around us from getting closer to the Lord.  It was a time of searching, seeking, and asking what it is that we need to repent of and let go of to move forward.  This Call had a huge Cross in the back that we would draw our attention to so that we could lay it all down before Him, the One who took all our sins and washed it away with His blood as He was nailed to the cross.

After this personal call to repentance we were lead by different leaders in the Body of Christ to pray against some of the devastating immorality and idolatry that plagues our nation, government, social fabric, educational systems, churches, family’s, homes, babies, and personal lives.  Some of these issues included sex trafficking, abortion, homosexuality, immoral governmental leaders, personal compromise, and more.  I must say I was heavily impacted when a documentary film producer of sex trafficking held up a little child’s blood stained clothes that were found at the scene of a sex trafficking bust.  How can this be happening in our nation,  a nation with a deep conviction against slavery?  Yet this is happening in most major U.S. cities! The good news is God is revealing this darkness and answering our prayers by catching the sex traffickers, healing and setting victims free, as well as having Craig’s List ban “Adult Services” on it’s page.  May I remind you, as well as myself, to continue to pray for this issues as we know the Lord is listening and responding.

Another thing that really convicted me was the call sent out for HOLINESS and PURITY!  My generation is so filled with excess and over stimulation that we don’t even know what true holiness and purity even is.  We are surrounded by constant entertainment, technology, fashion, noise, celebrity’s, gossip, slander, drunkenness, compromise, darkness, deception, depression, immorality, etc… that we don’t even have a mindset for what the Lord has called us to.  Corey Russel shared from the stage that,

“Christianity isn’t boring, you are!”

WOW!  How can we know if God is truly fun, exciting, and adventurous if we are giving all of our time to the counterfeit with self seeking pleasures and gratifications?  O’ Lord, set my generation free from the bondage and raise up an army of young reckless abandoned lovers of YOU!  Set us free Lord.  Take our generation from holy-less to HOLINESS!

I know this little blip can’t give you the fullness of what was poured out at the solemn assembly of prayer and fasting but I pray that it will stir you enough to seek out what God is saying to you individually and what He is pouring out to His Body corporately. Join TheCall by responding and joining a world wide movement of lovesick believers that will not back down or compromise until the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
